Why do girls bow their head when the groom ties the thaali around her neck?

The reason the bride bows down while accepting the thaali is to tell her husband "I'll bow my head head but I'll make sure that you will be able to walk with your head held up high!"
When a girl bows down it doesn't mean that the groom is superior to her! It simply signifies the respect she has for him.
